Circe Offering the Cup to Ulysses (1891)

Emanuel Dimas de Melo Pimenta
fragment of Circe (2019)

In 2019, just before the pandemic that paralyzed the planet, I dedicated a film, with one or two screenings, to a performance by the Italian artist Marilena Vita, a dear friend. In fact, the film is dedicated to her. In this film I used Meridian - a musical composition of mine, created in 1992, almost thirty years before.
The film was called Circe.
Circe is a fabulous character from the ancient Greek mythology, a goddess who is, at the same time, love and war.
In Homer's Odyssey, it is Circe who advises Ulysses to delve into the underworld, into memory, to achieve a knowledge of life that would make his mission possible. Circe is not only good and evil, love and destruction, but mainly seduction and transformation, passion and discovery. Every transformation, every discovery, is a form of destruction that incorporates the world that existed before.
This condition that implies glamour and self-consciousness is of such a refinement to the point of setting Circe's figure apart from other gods like Abraxas or Janus.
For all that, the etymological meaning of the word Circe is "circle".
Circe - performance and film - had, with the musical composition Meridian, their world premiere on May 28, 2022, in Mantova, Italy, at the Light Art Biennale.

After the unexpected and bloody tragedy that the world is living with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, my already defined project suffered a substantial interference.
