the concert

The four compositions of the concert were dedicated to John Cage in his life time. Concert for Frogs and Crickets, composed in 1984, is based on sounds recorded inside Brazilian rain forests. Its structure was based on a motet composed by the French composer Guillaume de Machault, who lived between 1300 and 1377. Sun was made in 1986 using, as base, the information of sound waves from the Sun. It is as if we could listen to the sounds produced by the Sun. The piece titled Cage was composed in 1987. It uses the "metabolic" sounds of the city of Lisbon during a whole day and compressed into 13 minutes. Those sounds are worked inside a three-dimensional synergetic virtual structure of sound transformations. Mesostic is dated of 1991, and it uses the sounds of John's breath. All these pieces are mentioned in the book John Cage - The Silence of the Music, as well as in the letters exchanged between John Cage and Emanuel Dimas de Melo Pimenta. They were first performed in San Marino, in 2002, as the beginning of the European celebrations of the 10th anniversary of John Cage's disappearance.
