WHERE BOLOGNANO IS?

Bolognano is a small village about 20 km from Pescara and one hour from Rome. It dates from the year 1.000 and has becoming a world center for contemporary art. Joseph Beuys lived in Bolognano in the 70s and 80s. The origins of Bolognano go back thousands of years, and evidence of its existence can be found as far back as 872 with the invasion by the Saracens. During this period various religious orders (in this area the monks from San Clemente a Casauria Abbey) built small fortified villages, castles and fortresses to protect themselves from bandits and attacks. The defenceless craftsmen and countrymen who lived in the area started to build houses as close as possible to the fortified town so that they could take shelter inside them if necessary. This is how Bolognano was formed. In the CHRONICON CASAURIENSE there is evidence of a place called "Bolonianum" existing and which was fortified by the monks in the year 943, half a century after it was given to them by Ludovico II. In the oldest part of the town there are still some remains of the wall and two big arches that once were the doors leading into the town are still visible. These doors were closed during the night or whenever the town was in threat of outside attacks. For many years Bolognano was ruled by the monks until 1273, when Abruzzo was divided into different districts and became a part of Abruzzo Citeriore. In 1648 Bolognano belonged to the district of Chieti and in 1927 became part of the "new" province of Pescara.

Taking the highway Rome-Pescara, stop in the city Torre dei Passeri - about 30 kilometers from Pescara: Bolognano is not far.

Thanks to the efforts of Lucrezia De Domizio, Baroness Durini, since the 70s Bolognano has been gradually transformed into an open air museum of contemporary art as well as in a fabulous center of culture.
